The Ultimate 3-Month Study Plan for the TOEFL iBT® (2026)

April 01, 2026

Student

If you’re planning to take the TOEFL iBT® in 2026, preparation is key to achieving success. But where should you start?

This 3-month study guide is designed to help you structure your revision, helping you build a study-routine that supports your TOEFL® goals. Let’s get started.

Month 1: Building your foundation

Before creating your study plan, you need to know your base test level. To do this, start with a practice test. Use this test as an opportunity to find out which sections you enjoy, which are weaker, and the current score you’re working at.

After your test, set the score you want to achieve. This score should be based around the grades you need for the universities you plan on applying to so make sure you understand the requirements beforehand.

Top Tip: If your current score isn’t near the one you need to achieve, don’t worry! This process is designed to help you build a study plan to improve your English skills. The growth starts here!

Focus on the core 4 skills

During your first month, you’re not just “studying for the TOEFL test.” You’re building your overall English skills to help you throughout university. To begin, start with the core 4 skills you’ll be tested on: Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking.

Reading

The Reading section tests your ability to understand a written passage. You’ll be asked to read text, then answer questions based on the information you’ve read. This requires you to:

  • Quickly identify main ideas
  • Understand vocabulary
  • Skim text without losing meaning

To build your reading skills, try reading news reports, short essays, and academic articles. You can also supplement your studies with magazines on topics that interest you.

Listening

The Listening section of the TOEFL iBT test assesses your ability to understand spoken English. The test uses content that reflects the realities of modern academic environments, helping you prepare for life at university.

To prepare for this section practice by:

  • Listening to lectures and conversations
  • Taking short notes as you listen
  • Focusing on identifying key ideas

Avoid trying to write everything down. Instead, train yourself to pick up key ideas that help you to effectively answer questions.

Speaking

The Speaking section of your test will look at your ability to construct sentences, speak naturally, and organize ideas. To start your practice:

  • Speak to friends in English
  • Build a list of words you struggle to pronounce
  • Listen to passages and prepare your own responses

The aim here isn’t perfection. Avoid using overly complex language and instead focus on clarity.

Writing

The Writing section focuses on practical written communication, such as writing emails, or argument-based responses.  To prepare for the writing section start by:

  • Learning how to structure ideas
  • Practicing spelling and vocabulary
  • Avoiding unnecessary complexity

Simple, well-organized writing can often score higher than complicated but unclear responses.

Start your practice tests

As you practice your skills throughout month 1, start completing additional practice tests in a relaxed environment. Focus less on time, and more on understanding the test format. The key here is building familiarity.

Month 2: Build out your revision strategy

Once you feel you have a strong foundation, it’s time to focus on how to effectively take the TOEFL iBT test. To begin, you want to create a weekly structure based on your lifestyle.

It’s important that you don’t cram your revision or burn yourself out. Instead, create a routine that you can stick to. For example, every week complete:

  • Four 1-hour study sessions
  • 1 practice test
  • 1 review session

You can also supplement your “revision” by listening to English podcasts, watching TV in English (or with English subtitles), and reading English content online. The key here is consistency. Consistent, shorter sessions will help you progress faster than long irregular study sessions.

Month 3: Test simulation

In the final month, your focus should shift from learning to performance. By now you should feel comfortable with the test format and ready to complete it in exam conditions. This means timed sections, practicing without notes, and new practice tests.

Build a test schedule

To put your learning into practice, you want to create a testing schedule alongside your revision. This can involve adding 2-3 tests a week to your routine, or, if you don’t have the time, replacing revision sessions with test practice. During each practice test you need to:

  • Follow exact timing
  • Sit in a quiet, distraction-free environment
  • Avoid checking answers mid-test

This can help you build your test confidence which can reduce anxiety on the actual test day.

Focus on time management

Time management is a crucial part of the test experience and a skill that many test takers overlook. While you’re taking your practice tests under timed conditions, you can train yourself to:

  • Move quickly through questions
  • Avoid overthinking
  • Stay focused from start to finish

These skills can significantly influence your final score, ensuring you can effectively answer every question on the test.

Eliminate weaknesses

After months of practice, you’ll know which test sections you prefer and which you feel less confident about. This is your opportunity to work on your weaknesses.

Whether you struggle with certain grammar, managing your time, or pronouncing words, focusing on certain weaknesses can improve your confidence on test day. Spend more time focusing on improving your weaker areas than completing tasks that you already score high in.

Final 7 days: optimizing your score

Your final week of revision is all about maintaining your performance and refining your knowledge. Practice speaking every day, complete 2-3 final practice tests, and review your weaker areas and mistakes.

During this week avoid learning new techniques, overloading your schedule, and studying excessively. By now, you should have completed most of the work. This week is the time for refinement.

Build a study plan around you

The TOEFL iBT test is a fantastic opportunity to showcase your English skills and unlock new opportunities to study abroad. The test itself is designed to assess how well you can use English in real-life situations: it doesn’t look at how well you can memorize templates. This means your preparation needs to focus on building real communication skills, not quick study hacks and tricks.

While creating your own 3-month study plan, make sure you tailor the plan to your lifestyle. Consider personal circumstances such as other exams, a job, or any other responsibilities you may have. The aim of a study plan is to spread your revision over a set period instead of cramming everything at once. This means you might need more than 3 months. If so, that’s not a problem! What’s most important is creating a study plan that works around you and helps you feel your best going into your TOEFL iBT test.

Good luck, we believe in you!
