The Ultimate Guide to Student Life in the UK for International Students

Moving to the UK is a fantastic opportunity for international students. It unlocks new opportunities, gives you access to world-leading education, and provides you with an experience that will stay with you forever.

Whether you want to study in the buzzing streets of London, the historic landmarks of Oxford, or the creative hub of Manchester, the UK gives you far more than lectures and library sessions. With a unique blend of lectures and seminars, cultural diversity, and social experiences, the UK is a place you’ll never forget. With this in mind, here’s what you can expect as an international student.

1. Academic Life: Independent and tailored

The UK is home to some of the world’s most prestigious institutions, including University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, and Imperial College London. Regardless of ranking, most UK universities share a similar academic culture and schedule.

Independent learning is emphasized

When studying at a university in the UK, you’ll likely have fewer contact hours than in other countries. This means less emphasis on lectures and seminars, with more time for self-study. Professors will often provide you with reading lists so you can study and contribute to class discussions using the resources they’ve assigned.

A mix of tests and assessments

Many courses test students using a mix of traditional, in-person exams, as well as at home assignments. This blend of testing methods gives students the opportunity to show off different skills including research, referencing, critical thinking, and more.

Shorter degrees, faster pace

Undergraduate degrees in England are usually 3 years, or 4, if students choose a year in industry. Master's programs are usually one year long, meaning students need to stay organized from day one.

2. Accommodation: Halls, houses, and shared living

Most first-year international students live in university accommodation, also known as halls. This is a fantastic way for students to meet other like-minded people, make friends, and get used to student living. Halls are often apartment buildings, with flats of 4 to 8 other students, each with their own rooms and a shared kitchen. While this may sound daunting, many students report that the people they live with in halls become lifelong friends. After their first year, most students move into private housing with friends. The cost of housing varies dramatically depending on location, with larger cities often being more expensive.

3. Social Life: Societies, sports, and pub culture

While getting good grades is important, student life in the UK isn’t just about studying.

Societies and clubs

Nearly every university in the UK has hundreds of student-run societies. These range from debating and chess to gaming clubs and sports teams. Joining a society is a fantastic way to meet like-minded people and create the best experience while studying in the UK.

Sports culture

Whether you’re a beginner or competitive athlete, there are teams for nearly every sport you can imagine. Wednesdays are often reserved for university sports competitions, where you’ll travel to other universities to compete.

The pub tradition

Pubs are a major part of British social life. Quiz nights, casual drinks after lectures, and society socials often happen there. Before you know it, you’ll be taking part in weekly pool and darts sessions with friends!

4. Cultural Diversity: A global classroom

The UK is one of the most popular destinations for international students. In cities like London and Manchester, you’ll hear dozens of languages on campus and find societies for different cultures.

You’ll meet classmates from Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas. As you meet people from different cultures, group living can become cross-cultures experiences where you’ll celebrate Diwali, Lunar New Year, Eid, and Christmas all within the same academic year.

5. Part-time work and finances

Many international students work part-time during their studies. Student visas usually allow up to 20 hours per week during term time, which is a great way to save money. That said, always check your student visa terms before applying for jobs!

Common jobs include:

  • Retail assistant
  • Barista
  • Bar staff
  • Campus ambassador
  • Library or student union staff

Balancing work and your degree require discipline, especially given the fast academic pace. However, part-time work helps cover living costs and builds invaluable work experience and soft skills that could support your future job applications.

A part-time job will also help with your budget as rent, transport, food, and social activities add up quickly. You can also take advantage of student discounts and financial advice services to help you manage your finances.

6. Everyday Life: Weather, transport, and food

Weather

There’s no way of hiding it... in the UK it rains... and it rains frequently. The UK climate is mild and wet for much of the year. Make sure you bring several waterproof jackets!

Public transport

The UK has good public transport within cities, and low-budget coaches can be used to travel throughout the country on a budget. Major cities are also connected by trains and with a student discount Railcard you can significantly reduce your travel costs.

Food

The UK is home to a fantastic international food scene. From local fish and chips to Indian curries and Middle Eastern food, you’re spoilt for choice no matter where you study in the UK.

7. Common challenges

While UK student life is rewarding, it isn’t always easy.

Homesickness

It’s completely normal to feel homesick during your first few months at university. Time zone differences, cultural adjustments, and missing family are common struggles.

Academic pressure

The emphasis on independent study can be stressful if you’re used to structured guidance. To assist with this, many universities assign students personal tutors who can help manage academic stressors.

Cost of living

Managing your finances can feel like a full-time job outside of your studies. Major cities can be extremely expensive, leaving you with very little money at the end of the month.

To assist with these challenges universities provide international students with extensive support services from financial support to mental health counselling and international student advisors. Asking for help is encouraged, not judged.

8. Travel opportunities

One of the best parts of studying in the UK is its location. From the UK you can explore Scotland’s Highlands, the Welsh coastline, or England’s countryside during weekends and breaks during semesters.

Furthermore, major European cities are just a short (and usually affordable) flight away. Budget airlines allow you to visit cultural hotspots like Paris, Rome, Berlin, or Barcelona for a long weekend without ruining your budget.

9. Personal growth and independence

Although living in the UK will come with challenges, it will help you grow in ways you never thought possible.

While living in the UK you’ll learn to:

  • Manage your time
  • Cook
  • Network
  • Handle finances
  • Navigate new cultures
  • Navigate cities

And of course, refine your English skills! By the end of your degree, you’ll feel more independent, adaptable, and confident.

Are you ready to study in the UK?

Student life in the UK is rewarding, diverse, and a fantastic way to challenge yourself. It combines world-class education with rich cultural experiences and personal growth that will leave you with a changed perspective of the world.

As an international student, it will help you build global friendships, become more independent, and discover who you are when pushed outside your comfort zone.

If you’re considering studying in the UK, prepare to be challenged, explore new cultures, and grow faster than you ever expected. This is an opportunity to unlock a new chapter in your life!
