TOEFL iBT Testing Options – Can I Take My TOEFL Test Online

The TOEFL iBT test is available in two ways, allowing you to choose an option that fits your needs. Before choosing an option, check with the institutions where you are applying to confirm their requirements.

Test At a Test Center

If you prefer a traditional test environment, a test center could be the best option for you.

Test center options are available worldwide at thousands of authorized TOEFL iBT test centers.

Test options are available over 170 times a year and can be found using the link below.

Test At Home

The TOEFL iBT Home Edition is the same TOEFL iBT test that students take at a test center, taken from the comfort and privacy of your own home, with a human proctor.

At home options are available worldwide, though it’s important you meet the environment and equipment requirements before you register.

Test takers can schedule a time that works for their schedule. Registration is required at least 24 hours in advance of your appointment time.

Why Should I Take My TOEFL iBT Test Online

1) Greater Speed and Flexibility

When taking your TOEFL test online you can choose a date and time that fits your schedule, including evenings and weekends.

2) Remove Travel Stress

You can avoid the stress of a commute and waiting rooms and instead take the test in the comfort of your own home.

3) Greater Comfort

When taking the test at home you’re in a familiar environment with fewer distractions. For some students, this can lead to less anxiety and enhanced focus.

4) Same Format

TOEFL iBT Home Edition is the same test you would take at a center. It uses the same scoring and offers the same recognition. The only difference is the use of an online proctor instead of a test center.

Before Your Test

Once registered, verify your identity using the Entrust IDVaaS app, if applicable in your region.

You can find out more about Entrust and the verification process here.

After verification and before your at home appointment, double-check that your testing area meets all equipment and environment requirements. These include:

  • Clearing your testing environment of all items besides a chair and solid work surface. Close doors and cover windows to minimize distractions.
  • Plug your computer or laptop into a power source.
  • Close all applications and unnecessary browser windows.
  • Shut down other devices that could cause internet bandwidth issues during your test.
  • Gather all materials needed during the session. Permitted materials are:
    • A valid passport, government ID or driver’s license.
  • All notes must be taken using an erasable marker on either a whiteboard or blank sheet of paper inside a transparent sheet protector. At the end of your test, the proctor will check to make sure your notes have been erased.
  • A mobile device to be used as a second camera (Find out more here)
  • Dress appropriately. Your ears and face must be visible to the proctor. Face masks and jewelry are prohibited throughout your home testing experience.

Starting Your Online TOEFL Test

To begin, select “Start Test” from the “My TOEFL Home” dashboard, after which the TOEFL Test App will launch automatically.

From here, you’ll enter a virtual waiting room where you can check in and, when prompted, connect your second camera.

Soon, you’ll meet your proctor and begin the check-in process. This will include scanning the room and a final equipment check, during which your proctor will assist in troubleshooting any issues.

Interacting With Your Proctor

Your proctor is there to help. They will be available throughout your test via webcam and chat. You can get their attention by speaking or by selecting the chat icon to open the chat box.

If your proctor needs to start a conversation, you will hear an audio signal from the chat function.

You are required to be seen on camera throughout your test.

When Can I Expect Results?

Once your test is complete, the date you will receive your official scores will be displayed, this is typically within 4-8 days after your test. You can also check this date in “My TOEFL Home.”
